The objective of the economics curriculum is to give students a solid foundation in economic theory, equip them with the tools to think more clearly about the problems that face society, and expose them to the ethical dimension of economic decision-making. 

Majors are required to complete course work in intermediate macroeconomics, intermediate microeconomics, statistics and mathematics. (See Major Requirements)  Emphasis is placed on the development of writing and problem-solving skills through case work and classroom discussion. Majors are required to complete a senior seminar that includes special topics as well as a research and presentation requirement. 

A student majoring in economics can concentrate on economics as it relates to business (Plan I) or to the disciplines of history, political science, environmental studies, and philosophy (Plan II). The economics major is designed to prepare students to either enter the workforce after graduation or enroll in graduate or professional school.
