“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement, nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” Helen Keller

Snapshot

I am currently serving Luther College as Visiting Faculty in English and Education, I am a Luther College alumna of 1975 with majors in English Education and Political Science. I studied for one year at the University of Durham, England, with Luther's IES Program, which whetted my lifelong appreciation for travel. I received my MA in Secondary Curriculum and Adolescent Literature from the University of Iowa, and I began my 34-year teaching career in public schools. The majority of my work has been in high school and middle school English, reading, writing, and literature. I've enjoyed designing and teaching Talented and Gifted programs, developing site-based anti-bullying programs, co-teaching Second Chance Reading for Struggling Adolescent Readers, and dual-credit College Writing courses -- including navigating the benefits and challenges of on-line instruction.

My passions include directing drama; incorporating drama into the classroom; working with students transitioning through the ELL experience while affirming their cultures; designing cross-curricular units; and blending Young Adult Literature into the richness of the literature classroom.

In our move to the beautiful hills of NE Iowa, my husband and I have enjoyed the renewed opportunities to participate in the vibrant Luther community. I've enjoyed teaching English 110 -- Introduction to College Writing, English 334- Young Adult Literature, Education 352, and 367 -- Advanced English Education Methods. It is my joy and passion to work with Luther students around strong writing, rich literature, and effective teaching.
