Paradise Lost Marathon

Siri Carlson

In January 2009, the students in Carol Gilbertson's Milton class (English 363) hosted a marathon of John Milton's great Christian epic, Paradise Lost.  We invited students from across campus, faculty, staff, and other Decorahites to come and read for a fifteen-minute stretch.  We set up in the Union next to Oneota Market, so people could wander by, listen to the great words and dramatic story for a half-hour, and then move on.  Or they could stay and listen for a few hours (one or two people listened for the whole 9 1/2 hours!).  One class member drew pencil sketches of various readers, and a member of the class regularly updated the whiteboard to let the audience know what book we were currently in, and what the dramatic action was--complete with comic sketches of the story.
