Wharton

Associate Professor of Music and French

What are your research interests?

My doctoral thesis, Visual Art and Poetry in the Songs of Francis Poulenc, reflects my interest in French poetry, Music, and Art History. I am now focusing on an analysis of the seven artist poems by Paul Eluard that Poulenc set as the song cycle Le Travail du peintre (The Work of the Artist.)  The cycle is rarely programmed.  I’m hoping that some help with the words will entice vocalists to sing it.  The piano accompaniments are splendid!

Are there other areas of interest for you as a piano teacher?

As a pianist and teacher of piano, I am particularly interested in rehabilitative technique for pianists who suffer from overuse injuries.

How do you feel about teaching piano and French?

I am very thankful to be teaching the two subjects I love and to share the connections between them with my students.  Also, as the daughter of two art teachers, I have a passion for the visual, and I use great works of art for vocabulary practice (okay—quizzes) or for helping pianists understand style periods, color, and line.
