Study Breaks and Winter Traditions [Inside Giving December 2011]

With late-night study sessions in Preus Library, endless hours of subject memorization, and final project preparation, even the most earnest of students find themselves needing a break during finals prep and this often results in study breaks that turn into winter traditions at Luther College. (Actually, if you're like me, you sometimes take these breaks instead of studying. But don't tell anyone.) 'Tis the season for studying and for fun and folly!

Summer in the City [Inside Giving September 2011]

This summer when I returned home from Nottingham, I couldn't yet fathom being back on campus. I had never stayed in Decorah over the summer before, and let me tell you: it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

My roommate and I spent the mornings working, but our afternoons and evenings were filled with tubing and canoeing adventures, stargazing, hiking and maybe a trip or two downtown to Rubaiyat Restaurant. It's easy to imagine schools shutting down during June and July, but summer at Luther is

Afraid to Fly: A Reflection on Luther Commencement 2011 [Inside Giving May 2011]

As a junior, I cannot know the dual excitement and sadness that seniors must feel as Commencement approaches. I have not completed my senior project, the pinnacle of my Luther career. I have not secured employment, nor have I made the decision to take a year off and figure out what I want to do. In short, I am not ready to sail into the world because my Luther journey has not yet been fully realized.

I never suspected that I would be part of something immense and far-reaching while living in rural Decorah, Iowa. In fact, I looked for smaller colleges specifically in order to get away from what I call "the bigness" of places. Yet here I am writing in Nottingham England, celebrating Luther College's 150^th Anniversary.
