International Internships in Malta

International Internship in Malta: Global Citizenship  - June 2012 (0 – 2 credits)

The internship uses Malta, an island nation in the Mediterranean Sea, to explore global citizenship, develop cross-cultural skills, and contribute to efforts to resettle African refugees seeking asylum in Europe and North America.

Students will experience what it means to be a citizen of the world and develop useful skills through:

  • Regular interactions with residents of at least one refugee center in Malta, teaching English to African refugees, and engaging with them through formal gatherings and activities, such as pick-up soccer (60%)
  • Presentations by experts in Malta on refugees and migration, including professors of law, history, anthropology, and social work from the University of Malta (10%)
  • Field trips to explore place and Maltese identity (10%)
  • Discussions (10%)
  • Readings (10%)

Cost Information

The International Internship in Malta: Global Citizenship program is an off-campus program administered by the Luther College Center for Global Learning. We welcome applications from Luther students and from students at participating ACM colleges.

Campus policies regarding payment for summer programs are often different than for programs taking place during the academic year. In most cases, financial aid will not apply, and students will pay educational and program costs directly to Luther College.

Students should check with their Off-Campus Studies Office and their Financial Aid Office to confirm their college policies regarding payment for summer programs because additional campus fees may apply, and financial aid may or may not be available.
