Sandhya Purohit Caton
Sandhya Purohit Caton is the Interfaith Coordinator for the Luther Diversity Center and the Office of College Ministries. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University, where she designed a course of study focusing on the interplay among the various religions and cultures of South Asia. While a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, she studied sacred and courtly literary traditions in both the Sanskrit and Persian languages. Her research interests remain focused on Islam as an integral part of South Asian culture and history, but her interfaith work at Luther College is drawing her towards consideration of religious pluralism here in the United States. As the daughter of immigrants from India, she has volunteered locally, sharing her educational and personal knowledge through visits to college and public school classrooms, at the Vesterheim Museum and other venues, and also with several church groups. She has served as youth educator for the Northeast Iowa Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, is affiliated with the Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center, and currently works to support interfaith initiatives both on and off Luther College’s campus. She makes her home in Decorah with her husband Brian Caton (History), her mother Ratna and toddler son Pranav.
