Joan deAlbuquerque, Director of Bands at Luther College, was appointed to the Music faculty in 2011. Dr. deAlbuquerque conducts the Concert Band, Wind & Percussion Ensemble, and Varsity Band. Her first tour with the Concert Band will be in the upper mid-west this fall.
Prior to Luther College, Dr. deAlbuquerque was the Associate Director of Bands at California State University, Long Beach from 2003-2011. She conducted the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, taught conducting class and assisted in the supervision of music student teachers. Dr. deAlbuquerque has toured with the CSULB Symphonic Band, which included performances in 2003 at Disney Hall in Los Angeles, 2004 and 2009 at the Intercollegiate Wind Festival in Fresno, CA as well as the Western/Northwestern College Band Directors National Association Conference in Reno, NV, March 2010.
Dr. deAlbuquerque earned a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music in wind conducting from Michigan State University, where she was a student of John Whitwell. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting from the University of North Texas, as a student of Eugene Migliaro Corporon. Prior to her doctoral studies at the University of North Texas, Professor deAlbuquerque was Interim Director of Bands at Adams State College, where she directed the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and the Marching Show Band. An experienced public school teacher, she was Director of Bands at Pinckney (MI) High School, where she directed the Wind Symphony, Marching Band, and taught instrumental and general music at the elementary and middle school levels.
As a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, Dr. deAlbuquerque has worked with a variety of middle school and high school bands both national and international in New Mexico, Colorado, California, and Israel. She has conducted honor bands throughout Southern California, and presented clinics and workshops for the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association and Tau Beta Sigma. Dr. deAlbuquerque has conducted at state and national conferences including the Southern California School Band Directors National Association, California Band Directors Association, the College Band Directors National Association Western/ Northwestern Conference, and the National MENC Conference.
Professor deAlbuquerque is a regular contributor to the Teaching Music through Performance in Band series, published by GIA Publications. She has also written for the Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma publication, The Podium. In 2004 she was selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Women, and is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Sigma, Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association, Iowa Bandmasters Association, and College Band Directors National Association. From 2008-2011, she was on the national board of Tau Beta Sigma as Vice President of Professional Relations.
