Student Discussion Forums

Five interest-based Student Discussion Forums will be held Friday evening, March 4, 2011, from 10:00 pm -11:15 pm, to encourage networking and discussion between student groups that are active on each of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum college campuses.

Discussion topics will include Social Justice and Advocacy; Environmental Concerns and Sustainability; Gender Equality and Sexuality; Service; and Interfaith Cooperation.  A brief description for each group can be found below.

These informal gatherings will be hosted by student leaders of various Global Concerns groups at Luther College. All students are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Social Justice and Advocacy (Dione Miller--ONE Campaign) - This discussion forum is for those interested in the promotion of peace, human rights, and general social justice issues and advocacy. Anyone involved in Amnesty International, ONE campaign, SEEDS, Mission for Peace, ELCA Advocacy Team, Cobbers for Pacodes, Invisible Children United, Student Peace Alliance, Social Justice, MN Students for Equal Rights, MPIRG, STAND, Peace and Justice Resource Network, Stitches for Peace, and any other related group are encouraged to attend this discussion forum.

Environmental Concerns and Sustainability (ECO/Sustainability work-study students) - Students interested in the care of the environment, global warming, and/or living sustainably will appreciate this opportunity for discussion.  Everyone with these interests, including members of ECO, Augie Green, the Student Environmental Alliance, and the Environmental Coalition are encouraged to attend.

Gender Equality and Sexuality (Benj Kost-PRIDE) - This forum is for people and groups that aim to reduce gender and sexuality stereotypes so that people of all sexual orientations and genders can enjoy the same access to human rights, equality, and respect.   All interested students are encouraged to attend, especially those involved in Voices for Choice (VOX), Gay Straight Alliance, PRIDE, Feminist Majority Alliance, Student Feminist Collective, Queer and Straight in Unity, GLOW, Students for Reproductive Health, and The Men’s Group.

Service (Alex Mundy-Habitat for Humanity) - This forum is aimed at groups involved in a variety of different types of service either locally or globally. Students involved in service groups are encouraged to attend, especially members of Habitat for Humanity, Link, Circle K International, Optimists Club, Outreach Teams, SALT, Justice Journeys, Feed My Starving Children, Serving Our Society (SOS), Luther Athletes Serving Others, PALS, and Believing and Achieving.

Interfaith Cooperation - This forum is geared towards those who want to promote interfaith conversation, understanding and cooperation among people of diverse faith backgrounds.  People involved in Journey Conversations, Muslim Student Association and Allies, Interfaith Student Association, Muslim Student Organization, TREK, Koinonia, Faith and Learning, Campus Ministry Commission, Mathitai, Interfaith Conversation (ICON), Movement for Inter-Religious Relationship and Action (MIRA), Jewish Student Organization, and others interested in inter-faith discussions are invited to attend.
