The Luther women’s tennis team opened up a busy weekend with a home match against UW-Eau Claire on Saturday, September 10. The Norse grabbed an early 2-1 lead in doubles and pulled out some tight sets in singles on the way to a 7-2 victory. Luther improves to 4-1 overall while maintaining a 2-0 mark in the IIAC with the win.
Junior Annie Whiteley and freshman Lola White-Baer came out firing and cruised to an (8-0) victory at No. 3 doubles, defeating Stephanie Wolf and Renee Nelson. The matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles were much closer with each team picking up a point. Senior Cami Czech and junior Katy Lindstrom won the final three games to pick up an (8-5) decision over Katie Gillman and Taylor Heltne at No. 1. UW-Eau Claire got on the board with a comeback (8-6) victory at No. 2 where Gretchen Bachmeier and Maddie Johnson rallied to edge Luther’s Cassandra Chalhoub and Elise Allen.
Luther’s bottom of the lineup came through with a trio of victories to clinch the team victory. White-Baer was first off the court again, cruising to a (6-3, 6-0) victory against Johnson at No. 4. Lindstrom fought from behind in her first set before rolling to a (7-6 (4), 6-1)) win at No. 5, defeating Nelson. Freshman Adriana DePaolis played a lengthy match at No. 6, eventually outlasting Wolf (6-3, 6-2) at No. 6.
UW-Eau Claire earned its second team point when Heltne held on for a (6-4, 2-6, 10-6)) win over Czech at No. 1. Allen and Chalhoub each won a set tie-breaker on the way to straight set victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Allen won (6-3, 7-6 (3)) over Gillman at No. 3 and Chalhoub closed things out with a (7-6 (3), 6-3) victory against Bachmeier at No. 2.
