Buckthorn Blitz

Buckthorn Blitz
Saturday, November 7, 12:30 - 4:30 PM
Volunteer opportunity to help restore Luther College's Natural Areas!

European buckthorn, an invasive plant species, is taking over parts of Hickory Ridge Woods at Luther College.  You can help restore the forest for native trees and wildflowers, and the animals that rely upon them.  Come join Luther students, faculty, staff, and alumni in a work party.  We will remove invasive species and plant native seeds in their place.

Saturday, November 7, 12:30 - 4:30 PM

Meet in the parking lot of the Decorah City Pool (corner of College Dr and Ridge Rd) at 12:20 PM.  We will walk from there to Hickory Ridge Woods.

Wear sturdy shoes and old, warm clothing that can become muddy.  We will be working on moderate slopes which may be slippery -
particularly if it is raining.  Bring work gloves (if possible) and a bottle of water.

We'll teach you how to identify buckthorn and three other invasive species that threaten forests in NE Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, will provide work gloves (if needed), an afternoon snack while in the woods, and a pizza dinner at the end.

Please RSVP if you plan to attend to make sure that we have sufficient supplies (and snacks!).  If you register and are then unable to
attend, please cancel by email.

This event will be appropriate for children ages 6 and above if accompanied by an adult with whom they can work.  Herbicide (Roundup) will be applied after volunteers leave an area.  Children should be supervised so that they do not return to an area where herbicide has been applied.  Hand tools (loppers, bow saws) will be in use.
