Luther receives $85,979 grant for permeable pavement construction

Luther College has been awarded an $85,979 grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to replace the asphalt paving of an existing 24,600-square-foot parking on the Luther campus with a more environmentally beneficial permeable surface.

Ask Luther College students, “What is the Diet of Worms?” and they may explain it was the assembly in 1521 in Germany at which Martin Luther refused to recant his writings, stated “Here I stand. I can do no other,” and inspired the Protestant Reformation. Or they may say “fruits and vegetables.”

Luther students have started disposing of fruit and vegetable waste in worm composting bins installed Jan. 15 in seven of Luther’s residence halls by students from the Luther Sustainability program.

Luther announces ACUPCC Climate Action Plan

Luther College joined colleges and universities across the nation that announced their Climate Action Plans on Sept. 15. The plans developed by the educational institutions, which are all signatories of the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), contain the specific steps the schools are taking to reach climate neutrality by drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and long-term operational costs.

Sebesta Blomberg consultants help Luther develop energy conservation program

Luther College has hired consultants from Sebesta Blomberg, a worldwide engineering firm, to lend direction to a new initiative at Luther on energy conservation. The college is using a portion of the $45,000 Rocky Mountain Institute grant received this summer to bring the consultants to campus Nov. 3-4.
